Fesslermill1396 distillery, a Swabian gem

At home in the beautiful Mettertal, on the edge of the Stromberg and embedded in the centuries-old tradition of the Fessler Mühle, is the whiskey and specialty distillery Wolfgang and Tobias Fessler.

Regionality and tradition are very important in the centuries-old Fessler Mill in Sersheim in the Ludwigsburg district. The associated Fessler distillery continues this today with its special Mettermalt whiskey and various distillates made from special raw materials, as well as liqueurs based on old recipes. In addition to the whiskey, a special highlight is an alwa mettermalt gin with its own herbal mixture and alwa spring water from Sersheim.
Wolfgang and Tobias Fessler also think outside the box. Sersheim has had a partner community in Piedmont for over forty years. Canale is nestled in the Roero and Langhe region, surrounded by Barolo and Barbaresco. In recent decades, many friendships have developed between the Fessler mill and winegrowers around Canale, so it is not surprising that Piedmontese influences also flow into one or the other distillate. Wines from Canale and the surrounding area such as Arneis, Nebbiolo and Barolo can also be purchased from the Fessler distillery.

Whiskey production is still celebrated in the fesslermill1396 distillery. Even the grain is hand-picked, so to speak. The grinding takes place on the great-great-grandfather’s grinding mill from 1870, which allows a wide variety of grain sizes and degrees of grinding with its grinding stones. For this purpose, the stone is specially sharpened by the millers beforehand, which is also backbreaking work, just like a hundred years ago. The grain for mettermalt whiskey, which takes its name from the river of the same name that powers the mill, is then lovingly distilled and refined in the distillery next to the mill. The Fesslers source the barrels for storage and maturation from a wide variety of regions, one of the little secrets of mettermalt, and of course there are also Barolo and Nebbiolo barrels from the partner community of Canale, Piedmont. Their own grain is grown for distilling; in the 80s, Wilhelm Fessler, Tobias’s great-grandfather, was recognized as a special grower of malting barley for barley malt. The Fessler Mühle offers selected whiskeys from various Baden-Württemberg distilleries – from the region for the region.
The fesslermill1396 distillery is the home of Württemberg’s first whiskey club, events such as whiskey and spirits tastings (grappa, gin and much more), wine hikes and special events such as whiskey meets shellac take place here.
