Brennerei Henrich (Obsthof am Berg)
Creation and development of the “Obsthof am Berg”/Henrich distillery
In 1970, our grandparents moved the small fruit farm from the center of Kriftel to the outskirts. Did you know that the district name of the new fruit farm was “Am Berg”? Now it will certainly quickly become clear where the “Obsthof am Berg” got its name from. Unfortunately it’s not more exciting.
But further developments became exciting when the distilling rights were acquired from father Horst Henrich in 1983. Not easy in Hesse, because processing with pure alcohol was and is handled very strictly and was initially restricted in the beginning. “Nothing is thrown away and, if possible, everything is recycled,” was how grandmother Anni said it. So excess harvests of apples, plums, mirabelle plums and pears were distilled. And the grandmother made her distinctive herbal liqueur from her herb garden. You can still get apple brandy and our herbal liqueur “Amberg” in our farm shop in the same recipe today.
Father Horst Henrich continued to run the fruit-growing business and expanded it from an initial 6 hectares of cultivation area to over 12 hectares in 2000. After long negotiations with the authorities, the new distillery was put into operation in 2006. With the abolition of the quantity restrictions due to the new permit, the decisive starting signal was given for the distillery as we know it today.
The idea of using wooden barrels was also implemented in 2006 in order to produce a richer apple cider brandy.
In 2008 the heart project “gilors Single Malt Whiskey” was started. The DLG-winning experiences with barrel-aged spirits and the ambition to create something completely new paved the way for German quality whiskey from the Vordertaunus.
In 2010, a summer oasis was created in the garden of the distillery and quickly gained a lot of popularity as a “cider-bouquet restaurant on the mountain”.
The fruit farm in its literal meaning gradually lost its importance and so the Henrich distillery was consequently created to underline the new character of the business. With a lot of effort, the products from the Henrich distillery were given a dignified ambience in the newly opened farm shop in summer 2020.
But the journey is not over yet. Stay tuned for what’s to come! We always have lots of ideas.
