Steiger Spirits
The conditions underground are not easy. From the seventh level you are getting closer to the core of the earth. The air becomes warmer, somehow softer – at least completely different than what you breathed in just a few minutes ago. Before you climbed into the cage and raced into the depths at top speed as it entered. There is a fine dust in the air down here, along with constant darkness. After a few meters in the wide tunnels, you forget your sense of space and time. The noise of the machines rings in your ears. You have to do everything physically to fulfill your mission: to unearth mine gold. Sweat is running down your forehead and tons of earth are imperceptibly, but all the time, sitting dangerously on your neck.
There are certainly more relaxed places to work. But these special circumstances have an impressive effect on the people who risk or have risked their lives every day in mining: 1,000 meters down, it doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from. What matters here is what you do and that everyone can rely on you. This tough grind brings us together forever. Working colleagues become real buddies underground.
Friends like Andi and Dirk, who have been through all of life’s ups and downs together since their school days and like to toast with a good drink. In 2016 they came up with the idea for Steiger Korn and Steiger Gin: spirits that are based on traditions but still have a special taste and, above all, remain genuine and down-to-earth. Together with Andi’s wife Luci, they go looking for their homeland and find a traditional local distillery in Dorsten. Over the course of a year, they worked with her to develop Steiger Korn and Steiger Gin, experimenting with botanicals, citrus fruits and carbon filters. They have been serving it to friends and family since the end of 2016 and they quickly get a taste for it. At the time, the labels were stuck in Luci’s parents’ garage; at some point, a few hundred bottles could no longer quench their thirst. Christoph, whom the two met in 2019, agreed with the fan community after a test sip and a few glasses later everyone agreed: the brand had to go into series production. Much more than a crazy idea.
