The history of the brewery and distillery is closely linked to the history of the town of Welz, which has 600 inhabitants. Welz is also included in lists of church income between 1250 and 1300. However, the small town in the Rurtal probably came into being much earlier. A reference to this is provided by the church’s patron saint Lambertus, who probably founded the parish of St. Lambertus in Welz in 739.

Beer has been brewed in Welz since 1828. The Welzer Brewery & Distillery became the property of the Rainer family in 1906. The brewmaster brothers Joseph, Johannes and Jacob from Lower Bavaria bought the business for 20,000 gold marks and 4 days’ worth of wood.
The Welzer Brewery & Distillery experienced its first heyday before the Second World War. The same caused severe destruction in Welz. The Welzer Brewery & Distillery was also destroyed except for the street front. However, with the support of the entire town, the business was rebuilt after 1945.
In 2020, the Jacobsen family took over the brewery and continues to run it under the name Lambertus Bräu & Brand GmbH. The operation of the brewery and bar that belongs to the brewery is now also in the hands of the Jacobsen family.
The Corona year 2020 also brought some bright spots to the traditional company. Due to the disappearance of the need for draft beer, alternatives were quickly sought. For the first time in almost 200 years, Lambertus Pils and Dunkel have been available in standard 0.33 liter bottles. The time was also used to restart the grain distillery after several years of shutdown. According to the company’s old recipe books, distillation is now taking place again under high pressure.
