Destillerie & Brennerei Heinrich Habbel
The Heinrich Habbel distillery and distillery in Sprockhövel, North Rhine-Westphalia, has been family-owned since 1878. The former grain distillery with an attached farm is now the largest fruit distillery in the region. Michael Habbel, managing director and owner, who inherited the grain distillery from his father in the 1960s, had the ambition to turn his hobby into a career from an early age. So in the 1970s he switched from grain to fruit. The Habbel distillery’s product range therefore offered not only products made from grain, but also a large selection of fruit brandies and liqueurs. Another product of passion is Habbel’s “Ancient Whisky” from the distillery, which he distilled in 1977 and has stored and matured to this day to make it what it is today: Germany’s oldest whisky, which has won several awards at international trade fairs such as InterWhisky.
In 2011, Michaela Habbel joined the family business in the fourth generation and runs the distillery together with her father. The “whisky” product range is currently being expanded:
Accordingly, another new distillery was built in 2013 – the Hillock Park Distillery – which owes its name to the “Hillock” whisky liqueurs that have now established themselves as an independent brand in the Habbel company. This new building not only offers the latest in innovative technology, but also a magnificent new pot still with a specially designed rapid steam generator. Michael Habbel chose the typical helmet shape based on the Scottish model and developed it himself to ensure the best quality. The filling capacity of 1,500 liters is dimensioned so that large quantities can be handled at the same time without becoming industrial.
In keeping with tradition, the company is a manufacturer, a classic craft that impresses with great attention to detail. This idea has been preserved for generations, is part of the company’s current philosophy and is, last but not least, the cornerstone of every good whisky.
