Johns Lane Distillery
John’s Lane Distillery was founded at Thomas St., Dublin in 1791. In 1866, John Power & Son began to bottle their own whiskey, which made them the first distillery in the world to do so. Before, distilleries sold whiskey only by the cask. John’s Lane distillers invented also known for a gold label for each bottle giving the whiskey its final name ‘Powers Gold Label’. By 1871 the distillery’s compound was about 7 acres (28,000 m2). The Power Family owned the distillery until 1966. After taht the Irish distillers formed the ‘Irish Distillers Group’, which decided to close down all of their existing distilleries to build a cooperative and modern plant in Midleton, County Cork right beside the existing Old Midleton Distillery. After acquisition of the Bushmills Distillery in Northern Ireland, the group controlled most of the distillery market in Ireland. In 1989, Pernod-Ricard bought the Irish Distillers Group.
