Elk Brewing

Okay, pardon the cliche, but Elk Brewing started, all because two people fell in Love….I can’t believe we just said that! No, but seriously, it did. That’s the truth. It started long ago, Eric and Lisa were dating, going to college and playing 9’s at a little brewery on Monroe. For Eric’s birthday, Lisa bought him a brewing kit, and a new hobby was taken on. The couple continued their college careers, brewing and hanging out at that little brewery. Now, here’s where the Love part comes into play. Eric proposed and the couple were married in July 2009. Eric brewed the beer and made wine for the reception, and Lisa named it ELK (Eric and Lisa Karns). It was a hit, so Eric kept brewing. Pretty soon, the passion for brewing outgrew Eric’s passion for studying. “I remember the day Eric told me he wanted to open a brewery. I just laughed at him. We had no idea where to start! My reaction was enough motivation for my husband, and here we are! Taking the leap to open the brewery was huge. We were newlyweds who were going to school for nursing and psychology. We had no clue where to start. I thought Eric’s dream would fizzle out, but he never became discouraged. This is how I knew we would be successful.”
So, there you have it. All because two people fell in Love! Along with the love, support and help of family, friends, and investors, Elk Brewing opened their doors to the public in May 2014.
In 2015, the success of the brewpub and a larger distribution footprint, Elk Brewing quickly out grew the brewery on Wealthy Street. In September 2016, Elk opened their second Brewpub and Restaurant in Comstock Park, MI. The new facility will house a new 15 bbl brewing system, bottling line and full kitchen.
